One of the big ticks on UK trad climbing is Lundy island. it’s a chunk of granite with a pub on top, trad climbing heaven!
Before we arrange things and open the sign up, we’ve put together some initial information about the Lundy trip:
The dates are a suggested window, taking into account the sailing days of the MS Oldenburg . If you’re short of time, you could look at the sailing times and see if a different one works for you.
Lundy has the biggest slab of granite in the UK, the Devil’s slide, and a host of quality routes, experience of climbing multi pitch trad on sea cliffs is essential here.
As most of the climbing on Lundy is tidal, we have picked a weekend with low tides around midday.
We are planning on camping on the Island, please book your pitch through the Landmark trust website here(there are holiday cottages too if you’re after a high budget option)
The Pub serves food, all day, so we can eat out as well as cooking on the campsite
This is the exciting bit, there’s a choice of boat or helicopter depending on your budget. The suggested plan would be to share cars to north Devon, then get on a boat.
Most visitors arrive on Lundy on the MS Oldenburg, which sails from ilfracombe and Bideford more details here
Note: the current dates involve departing Ilfracombe, but sailing back to Bideford, If the numbers are sufficient and we all travel together it may be cost effective to use one on the local charter boats so that we can work to our own timetable. A facebook group will be setup for the event so we can discuss the options
It goes without saying that Lundy is extra special, known as place to see all sorts of seabirds including puffins. The trip is timed to be after the “bird ban” so that we can maximize climbing options
Please take extra care to look after this place.
