Event Type

It’s La Fowda time! and of course the beautiful cliffs of cornwall. A whole week on the cliffs in Cornwall!

Also… we now have a whole bunch of guide books covering so many more crags in the area!

The Crags

To put it simply, it’s absolutely gorgeous! A wide range of grades, both overlooking the sea and further inland.  We are spoilt for choice in the area, for all levels of experience and skill. If you want to have a look at the range of climbs, I recommend UKC – https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/crag.php?id=667#maps

The best time to come

If you haven’t been to the annual Cornwall meet yet – there will be club members there all week. The most popular time is always the first weekend due to the local festival on the first Saturday, from there many people try to take an extended weekend, or some manage the full week and weekend afterwards as well. As always, the best way to find out who will be there when to sort stuff such as tent sharing etc.. will be chatting with people on the facebook event – to be set up just before the event.

Accommodation

We are staying at a campsite near the coast and just outside the beautiful, small town of St Just. Booking for the campsite is per pitch and We (meets secs) will confirm pitches nearer the time based on sign up numbers – but they have cornered off part of the field for us.

We (the club) are making the booking with the campsite. The payment for the camping is sorted between you on arrival with the campsite (charged per pitch). We shall set up a facebook group nearer the time so that we can all work out who has tents / who needs a place in a tent etc… This will also be a good place to arrange lifts both ways for people coming and going at the same time.

As always, please be considerate for other campers regarding noise and general consideration.

La Frowda Festival

On the first Saturday of the meet, as many of you will know, the local town holds a rather extra ordinary festival with a precession throughout the day, which gets burnt at night. This is all accompanied by much drinking, dancing, music and merriment.

Environmental Considerations

Cornwall is a beautiful area that has changed slowly if at all, even along it’s roads there is a profusion of wild flowers. Just under half the cliffs are owned by the national trust, who have to attempt the tricky balance of conserving them whilst maintaining recreational use. A lot of the Penwith coastline has been designated as SSSI. Lichens give the rocks their gold green and black colours, they take many years to grow, and where many climbers have passed before you, the parts of the rock you need to use are likely to be already clean, so please avoid further damage, as one careless move could leave a mark for decades.

Please place Ab ropes in the spots requested by the guide books to avoid additional damage to cliff tops

Please avoid nesting birds, Seasonal nesting restrictions are rare in Cornwall, but the cliffs are home to many birds, having a Fulmar messing up your living room would not be fun, and we should respect them leave them to nest in peace. If you see a nest with a chick you may scare it into jumping off, and just like us it’s unlikely to survive the fall.

Please take care not to damage the cliff tops, growing numbers of climbers can cause significant damage and this could jeopardize the access agreements that we enjoy.
