Crest Hill, Buckfastleigh, Devon, Dartmoor National Park

Event Type

Note – the dates for this meet have been moved (again).

New dates are 4th – 6th September.

Venue

Trad climbing on granite. Massive Tors on moorland and climbing through and above woodland canopies are the order of the weekend. Within the National Park are the well known climbing areas such as The Dewerstone and Haytor, plus loads more trad and bouldering in the area.

Approaches to all the climbing venues are generally short, easy walks, so there are few constraints.

Suitability

Summary: Open to all
Dartmoor has a wide array of trad routes and bouldering catering to all abilities. Some experience of trad climbing will help you get the most out of the area, but if you’re relatively new to outdoor climbing or trad, then Dartmoor’s a good venue to get some more under your belt.
Most of the climbing on the Tors tends to be single pitch, but there are some lovely multi-pitch routes available in The Dewerstone.
If you’re not yet self-sufficient then that’s fine, as always the committee are here to help so please just drop us a message so we can manage numbers and make sure there’s someone for you to team up with.

Accommodation

We’ll be staying at the South Dartmoor Bunkhouse in Bunkfastleigh on the south edge of Dartmoor National Park. The bunkhouse has space for 16 across two bunk rooms, one sleeping 12 and one sleeping 4. Information on facilities can be found here. Please note – parking outside the bunk house is very limited (please car share where possible). There is parking elsewhere, usually at the top of Crest Hill, or in the nearby car park.

The bunkhouse will cost £24 per person for 2 nights (Friday, Sat).

Please note – when booking a paid place on this meet you are committing to attending. We cannot offer refunds for meets where the Club has booked accommodation in advance as this leaves us out of pocket. There will be a wait list available for this meet. If, after booking, you cannot attend for any reason you can recoup the cost by transferring your ticket to the next person on the wait list. If there is no one on the wait list it will be your responsibility to find a replacement. Ticket transfers will need to be done by the committee so please let the committee know.

Things to bring:

Essential:

  • Sleeping stuff – Sleeping bag / bedding and pillow. Bedding is not provided.
  • Climbing stuff – Harness, rock shoes, belay device, helmet, prussik, sling and carabiner
  • Clothing – A variety will be helpful.
  • *Weather gear – Waterproofs and a good pair of boots or shoes. Suncream
  • Personal – stuff for showering including a towel!
  • Food – Something for at least breakfast will be handy but there is a co-op 5 mins walk from the bunkhouse.
  • Water bottle – at least one for use when out and about

Desirable (bring if you have these):

  • **Trad rack, half ropes, single rope
  • Approach shoes
  • Boulder mat
  • Guide books
  • Maps of the area
  • Walking poles
  • Food for lunch and snacks for the hills / crags
*Wear suitable clothing for the British summer. Although some destinations in Dartmoor like The Dewerstone have some tree cover, the majority of the climbing tends to be on Tors which can be quite exposed and hot in the sun, or chilly in the wind so have a few layers available.
**A standard trad rack will see you up most stuff in Dartmoor. Being granite some larger protection like hexes and cams will often be helpful.
The club has a range of climbing equipment so if you need to borrow anything please check out the page here.
If you’re new to trad climbing and want some advice on the basics you should bring along to a trad meet check out our advice page just for you!
