**This training is happening at the North Wales meet over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. Do not sign up to the training unless you have a space on the meet**
Training will be given by Owen and Luke, both qualified instructors.
Introduction to trad climbing / trad climbing refresher
This course will be run by Luke on Saturday 29th April at the North Wales meet. It will be run in a 2:1 ratio.
On this one day event you will learn all the essential skills to safely climb routes with traditional protection, or cover these areas again in a refresher session.
Here’s a taste of what you’ll learn:
- Principles of trad climbing and the equipment used
- How to place trad gear and assess the quality of the placement
- Building anchors for belays
- Preparing abseils and abseiling best practices
- Guide book use and route selection
- Taking your skills forward
Prerequisite skills: Top rope experience, ideally leading indoors or out but not essential.
Equipment required: You will need your own harness, helmet and belay plate. If you have any trad gear then bring it with you, but gear will be available for you to use on the day.
Problem solving for climbing
This course will be run by Owen on Saturday 29th April at the North Wales meet. It will be run in a 6:1 ratio.
Ever had to get yourself out of a sticky situation when climbing? On this training day you will learn how to avoid problems when climbing and what to do when things do go wrong. This course is for everyone! If you are new and wanting to get into trad, these are important skills to have. If you’ve been climbing for a while, you may need a refresher on the techniques outlined below.
What you’ll learn:
- Problem avoidance techniques
- Dealing with emergency and rescue services
- Skill for abseiling safely
- Abseiling past a knot
- Ascending a rope
- Escaping the system
Prerequisite Skills: Have seconded a trad climb, keen to learn more about trad climbing. Have ideally abseiled before.
Equipment: You will need your own harness, helmet and belay device. If you have any trad gear then bring it with you, but trad racks will be provided to those who need them.
