Don Whillans Hut - Peak District
Don Whillans Hut
WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING BOOKINGS FOR THIS EVENT THROUGH THE WEBSITE. If you would still like to join us, please speak to Colette or another committee member at SCW on Tuesday, or drop us an email at firstname.lastname@example.org
Join us for 2 days of fabulous gritstone climbing in the Peak District and find out why many regard it as the home of British rock climbing. To make this an even more special meet we’ll be staying in the highly sought-after Don Whillans Hut in the Roaches.
It is anticipated that this will be a popular meet, spaces in the hut are limited to 12 in the Don Whillans hut and then all remaining bookings will stay at another local climbing hut (Roaches Bunkhouse) just 15min walk down the road. See the photos of both accommodation options below.
In both accommodation options there will be mattresses but no pillows provided in the Don Whillans hut. Both also have hot showers and cooking facilities.
Sleeping bag (and pillow / folded jumper for the Don Whillans hut)
Harness, rock shoes, belay device
Desirable (bring if you have these):
Trad rack, half ropes, single rope
This meet is available to all skill and ability levels. There will be plenty of experienced climbers to share their knowledge with newer novice members.
We will be cooking a group meal on Saturday night (included in the price, each hut will cook their own meal). There will be porridge provided on Sat and Sun morning (also included). Individuals will be responsible for arranging their own food for Friday evening and lunches.
Lastly the club has several good cooks! so its a pretty safe bet the food will be good!!

The DWMH is ideally situated for the outdoor enthusiast amongst the crags and gritstone boulders of the Roaches Estate in North Staffordshire. The former game keepers’ cottage, known as Rockhall Cottage, was renovated in 1991 in memory of one of Britain’s greatest mountaineers. It is leased and managed by the British Mountaineering Council, in collaboration with the Peak District National Park and Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. Whether it’s rock-climbing; walking the ridge, heather moorland and river valleys; enjoying the wildlife; mountain-biking on nearby routes; or just watching the sunset over a drink or two, this location has it all. No traffic but passing climbers, walkers and wildlife; steeped in history; rich in myth and legend, you’ll want to return year after year.
The hut sleeps 12 in two bunk rooms; has a lounge, well equipped kitchen, and washroom with shower (due to be fully refurbished in Spring 2015). Members of the BMC, its affiliated clubs or overseas National federations can book up the hut to 12 months in advance. Weekends (minimum 2 nights and the whole hut must be booked) are always very popular, especially with climbing clubs, but there is usually good mid-week availability, ideal for individuals and small groups. Follow the links for information about local facilities; suggestions and guides to climbing, walking, biking, nature and wildlife; and to read more about the hut’s rich history.
