TRAD SKILLS COURSE - Click for full info of this amazing deal

We are pleased to offer our members a heavily subsidized trad-climbing skills course!. Choose one of the two days of teaching by MIA trained / qualified instructors to get you trad climbing!. Then book your space in the hut (The training is in North Wales)

At just £30 this represents an exceptional opportunity to get professional climbing instruction at better than 1/2 the price of most climbing courses.  This is exclusive for SCC members.

There are two separate days of training, both providing professional instruction and all required equipment.

Saturday Course: (book at bottom of page)

This is the overall content of the days teaching, you will receive most of this which will be tailored to your specific experience and ability, ensuring everyone develops their existing skills.

  • Using half ropes for trad climbing
  • Rope management

Ideal for everyone as we will have 8 spaces being split into two groups of 4, meaning we can split abilities / experience. If you have never trad climbed before or have but are looking to refine your skills, this is for you!

Prerequisite experience (for Saturday):

  • Happy lead belaying
  • Have had some experience climbing on real rock (any style of ascent, bouldering, seconding, leading, sport/trad…)

Sunday Course: (book at bottom of page)
This is for anyone who would like to learn about trad anchors and how to prepare abseils for accessing sea cliffs, as found in Swanage.

  • How to place trad gear

  • Building anchors for and rigging abseils.
  • Safe abseiling skills

Prerequisite experience (for Sunday):

The climbing:

Trad climbing. Superb easy lab climbing at Little Tryfan or totally awesome multi-pitch trad climbing on Snowdon? one is truly spoiled for choice here. For those of you who have got to grips with single pitch lead climbing Snowdonia offers some truly exceptional easy multi-pitch routes – some routes are so epic you may want to take lunch at the 5th belay ledge!.

These world-class crags right next to the road, or two hours walk into the mountains – your call! The exact climbing locations will be decided on the nights before when we know what the weather will be like.

Wet weather fun:
If the weather is not obliging, Snowdonia has loads of great hiking, and Betws-y-Coed, which is a short walk from the hut, has loads of shops and tearooms etc. There is also a fantastic indoor climbing wall nearby.

Accommodation:
Hut, ‘alpine style’ bunks. Please bring your, sleeping bag, pillow, and ear plugs if you need them. Price is £15 per person for both nights.
The hut has a gas cooker/oven, fridge, toilet bloc with shower, hot/cold water, wood burning stove.

You are more then welcome to make your own accommodation plans too and then join us for group climbing or the course days. If you’re doing this then please just email the club here to let us know and we’ll keep you in the loop of where we’re climbing each day.

A note on food:
Since this is a hut meet and space is limited we advocate cooking as a group.
By division of labour we will cook an evening meal on Friday and Saturday and a porridge breakfast for Saturday and Sunday.
We will aim to keep the costs low, but will make sure the meals are of good quality. If there is a high turnout (fill the hut) then the food costs will be included.

Lastly the club has several good cooks! so its a pretty safe bet the food will be good!!

Guests:
Guests (inc u18’s) are welcome to come if accompanied by a responsible member. Please note however that spaces in the hut will be prioritised for members should this meet become oversubscribed. If you wish to bring guests please could you speak to us first and we will do our best to accommodate you.

All members are welcome!
Beginner climbers are welcome and are encouraged to join one of the course if you meet the prerequisite experience. In any case, there will be lots of opportunity to get belays, second routes, and top rope outdoor routes. Just ask –everyone will get to climb.

Driving:
Works out to ~£13 per person based on 4 sharing a car. Driver’s discretion.

Extras
Should the meet fill up, please contact us to be added on the reserve list, and we can explore with you possible alternative accommodation. Though not guaranteed, it may be possible to discreetly pitch 1 or 2 small tents or sleep on the floor.

The Cottage

Originally a farmhouse, now the main hut at TyB. The sleeping is in two bunk rooms with space for 8 in each, using two storey single bunks and three storey double bunks. The bunks are equipped with mattresses, but please remember to bring your sleeping bag! A few pillows and pillow cases are available. One room has an electric storage heater while the other is heated by a solid fuel stove.

The living room has a large homely open fire and plenty of chairs for relaxing on. There is also a table for eating your food at. The kitchen is equipped with Calor gas and electric cookers, a microwave, two fridges and all of the cutlery, crockery pots and pans that you could ever need!

The Byre

The Byre was originally a cowshed, but has been converted for the use of club members. It’s self contained, with it’s own kitchen. There are toilets and a shower in the garage. The byre has 2 double bunks and an alpine style bunk that sleeps 6 up top. The Byre is always kept free if the cottage is booked (apart from club meets), so you should always be able to drop in to the hut.

Location & Access

The best ways to approach the hut are via the A5 or the A55. Please see the map for the huts location. If you are using a map the OS Grid Ref is SH 587 625 If you are using Satnav you can use the postcode LL55 3EW or coordinates 53.15876 North, 4.1393 West.

The hut is smack bang between Llanberis and Bethesda, so there are plenty of shops, pubs and restaurants. If you need to get some fuel for the fires, then we recommend using the Texaco garage just down the road (also marked on map).
