IMPORTANT: This two day Winter Skills course is for those who have already paid their deposit for the Winter Meet and have signed up for training. Please do not book on if you have not signed up for the winter meet. Thank you.
The training will be lead by Abacus Mountain Guides and will equip you with the essential skills for staying safe in the mountains in Winter. More information can be found on their wesbite.
Specific details on when and where will be communicated nearer the time, but I imagine you will all be starting from the hostel where we are staying.
The course will include:
- Using boots/crampons/ice axe
- Movement on snow/ice
- Ice axe arresting
- Route planning
- Avalanche Awareness
- Navigation
- Emergency procedures
The cost of the training is also subsidised by the club, making it affordable as possible.
Medical & Emergency Contact Details
Abacus Mountain Guides have asked that everyone fill out their booking form, to provide them with any medical and emergency contact information. In the other participants box, just put ‘Southampton Climbing Club’ and leave the payment information blank.

Kit List
Please make sure that you have all the necessary equipment laid out in the checklist below, and that all the gear is packed in your rucksack ready to go for the first day.
If you need a helmet, please email the club and let us know asap.
Winter Skills Equipment Checklist
Specialist equipment: If you’re not investing in an ice axe/B2 boots/crampons, these can be hired from local shops. I would advise picking them up the day before, as not to delay getting out on to the mountain with your guides.

Any questions at all, please get in touch with the Club.
