For those already attending the 2024 Winter Meet and have confirmed their interest in the winter skills training
Due to instructor availability this course will take place on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th, during the Winter Meet.
This means you will have the Sunday 18th in Scotland before you have completed your training. It is advisable to use this day to familiarise yourself with some of the skills needed such as map reading and navigation. Do not expect to go out into the mountains before you have completed your course. There are plenty of activities to do around Aviemore and some great walking available in the area.
This course will be run in a ratio of 1:4 by qualified instructors from Aviemore.
This 2 day Winter Skills course will provide you with the essential skills you need to go out into the winter mountains walking safely. During the two days you will carry out journeys in the mountains looking at crampon and ice axe use, navigation, and introduction to avalanche awareness, emergency procedures, planning a day out and winter navigation.
You will meeting your instructor in the morning on the first day and discuss the plan for your winter skills course. Before heading out you will look at equipment needed and what to pack.
After this you will head out onto the hill and carry out a winter walking journey looking at the skills needed for safe travel in the winter mountains.
During the course we will look to cover the below skills:
- The use of crampons and ice axes
- Planning a mountain day
- An introduction to Avalanche awareness
- Winter navigation
- Emergency procedures and shelters
You will need to be ready to go by 8am on Monday 19th Feb. A meeting location will be decided closer to the time, but will likely be one of the chalets we are renting. If you need to hire any equipment please ensure you have done so by then.
A specific kit list will be issued by email closer to the time.
