Club FAQs & Info

From abroad trips to day meets, social events and indoor nights, SCC is a community of like-minded climbers of all abilities offering a wide range of activities suitable for anyone actively involved or looking to get into climbing.

Here are just a few examples of events we regularly run or have run in the past:

  • Sport climbing day trip in Portland
  • Trad climbing away meet in the Peak District over a bank holiday weekend
  • Evening meet at Calshot Activities Centre
  • Introduction to belaying training course
  • Winter climbing meet in the Cairngorms, Scotland
  • Crazy Golf at Mighty Adventures in Hedge End

...and many, many more!

Please note: Our events are organised and published throughout the year, so be sure to check back regularly for our latest!

The club’s membership year runs from January. The joining fee is £42, reduced to £25 for those joining from the beginning of July onwards and again reduced to £15 for those joining from October onwards.

As well as a sociable atmosphere in which to enjoy climbing, there are also some specific benefits of joining the club. These include:

Many of our members meet at local climbing centres in and around Southampton, including our committee. If you're new to the club, be sure to drop us a message and we'll make sure someone is there to look out for!

  • Mondays from 7pm at Red Spider
  • Tuesdays, 7pm - 10pm at Boulder Shack
  • Thursdays at Parthian
  • The first Thursday of each month from 7pm at Calshot Activities Centre

You need to be able to put a harness on, tie in to a rope, and belay safely. If you are not yet at this stage, we recommend that you first consider doing a local introduction to climbing course such as those run at Calshot.

For those looking to further develop skills, for example if you'd like to get into leading, we often run courses led by qualified instructors. Keep an eye on our Training page in case something comes up that interests you.

We would encourage you to come and meet us at one of our indoor climbing sessions. Please be aware that if you have not already been to the climbing wall you're looking to meet us at, you may need to undertake an assessment to use the facilities. We also run new member socials where prospective members are encouraged to come along, meet new and existing members, have chat, climb or slice of pizza even.

Non-members are also welcome to attend some outdoor meets as a guest of an existing member, although in many situations we have to restrict outdoor meets to members only, due to space. Please contact us if you'd lke to join one of our events as a non-member.

Yes, however this does depend on which type of membership you currently hold:

  • If you are already a member of the BMC through another BMC affiliated club, you can claim the cost of one of your BMC memberships back from the BMC when you join our club. Find out more about claiming multiple membership refunds.
  • If you have another form of full membership - Under 27, Individual or Family then it gets a bit more complicated as there is no automated system for this and you should contact the BMC membership team directly to discuss, via email - members@thebmc.co.uk or telephone 01614 456111. Please ensure that you review the benefits available as a club member and as a full member as there are some slight differences and make the right choice for you.

If you wish to upgrade your Club affiliate membership to be a full member of the BMC you can do this at a reduced rate - Full details can be found on the BMC's website.

Absolutely! For example, we welcome people who are staying in Southampton for a short period and want to keep climbing whilst away from home. If you are planning to climb regularly, you may well stand to save money by joining the club because of the discounts we receive at local walls (see above).

All you need to know about the meets can be found on our Meet FAQs page.

As a member you will be able to borrow items from the club's stock of climbing kit and guide books. As long as we are not using them for a club meet, you are welcome to borrow them!
